WhatsApp Feature Redesign

WhatsApp is a messaging service used by billions of people world wide. We were tasked with creating a feature that was lacking in the current model. Through user research we developed a way for users to tag individual contacts with colors for better sorting.
Overview
Our team aimed to find a redesign for a feature the mobile WhatsApp service was missing.
Client:
Role:
Product Manager/ UI Designer
Team Size: 3
Duration:
Two weeks
Tools Used:
Figma, Miro, Slack, Google Sheets
Understanding Needs
We wanted to make our feature align with WhatsApp’s business motto, “Simple. Secure. Reliable messaging.” Something that would fit in line with what WhatsApp wanted and something that users would find easy to use as well.

Developing a Persona
From our research we created the Traveling Professional archetype, someone who has a lot of different groups they need to coordinate with along with a busy and fast-paced life style. We did not give the persona an identity to keep it open ended and inclusive.

Affinity Mapping
In order to understand what we needed from out customers we conducted user interviews to establish our MVP.The mapping gave us vital information on pain points and feature prioritization.

Sketching
When sketching we wanted to consider adding our options into menus that already existed so users would not have to learn something new. Menu A is already a menu system implemented in most iPhones which is what we decided to use.

Menu C

Wireframing
When we moved to wireframing we wanted to incorporate systems that were already in use for an easier, smoother user experience.
Iterations
After user testing we learned that people were confused about what “tag” meant so we changed the name of the button to “color” for more clarity.

Prototype
To the left is a gif of our finished prototype. A simple and easy process of recoloring contacts for easier readability and organization. Full screen in the top right for a better view.
Next Steps
-
Work on a more extensive prototype
-
Clean up small details
-
Add additional features that coincide well with the current features
In this sketch we would make an alternative chat viewing method that would be more visually oriented.
